This is not that…

I can still remember this day so vividly….

I was standing in the wings, hearing the same Nutcracker music I had heard about a million times before, and staring at my 5 year old dancers in wonder. I had this feeling of pride mixed with a little bit of “How did I pull this off?”

Getting my class of about fifteen five year olds to be dancing together, doing *relatively* the same thing on stage for TWO WHOLE MINUTES, with smiles on their sweet faces, genuinely felt like a superhuman feat.

So how DID I do it? With lots of repetition, encouragement and being in control of the class at all times. With 5 year olds, you have to be very direct and tell them exactly what you expect and what they should do. I was also doing all the moves with them from behind the wings with a huge smile, like a crazy person.

It was my job to tell them what to do, how to do it, and to make sure they were doing it by demonstrating and encouraging them constantly. And yes, it was as exhausting as it sounds.

My work as a coach is the complete opposite of teaching 5 year olds!

There is this misconception out there that if you work with a life coach, they are going to be telling you what you should do. They will tell you how to solve all your problems based on their experience and how much more they know than you do.

It makes sense that we think this, given the other examples of coaches we have in society. On sports teams coaches are the ones calling the shots, telling their players what to do and how to do it. They give encouragement too, but it’s from a place of wanting to achieve a goal that is important to them and to the whole team.

But that is not what I’m doing as a coach.

Why? Well, number one, because you are not a 5 year old.

You are a WHOLE, RESOURCEFUL, and CAPABLE BEING who is full of innate wisdom.

You don’t need someone to tell you what to do.

(That is SO annoying anyways isn’t it?)

What you may need however is the space and skills to access that innate wisdom. To get better at listening to the wisdom of your body and develop a practice of tuning in to what it might be telling you. You may need someone to hold the space for you to quiet your mind and ask yourself what you really want or need.

As a coach, I will reflect what you are saying, point out any patterns I notice, and ask you questions to get to the heart of the matter. I may, with permission, offer a perspective that you may not see, just for your consideration. And I can help you stay accountable to yourself and your dreams in any way that YOU choose.

*I will 100% encourage you and celebrate your success with you, and that is kinda like those other coaches, but that's the only way we are similar.*

But I will NEVER tell you what you should do or what think is best for you, or what the “right” way is.

That is just not what BodyMind coaching is.
